AI Start-Up Battles Back: Perplexity's Defiant Response to News Corp Lawsuit

Perplexity AI, a startup that utilizes artificial intelligence to generate content from publicly available data, has found itself at the center of a high-profile lawsuit filed by News Corp. The company denies all allegations and claims that many of these lawsuits are an attempt to stifle the development of generative AI technology.

  • Perplexity AI is sued by News Corp for allegedly scraping and misusing its data without permission or proper compensation.
  • The company denies all allegations, claiming they are "simply false" and had expressed interest in working with News Corp on a content-sharing deal.
  • News Corp claims Perplexity AI is posting entire newspaper articles online without proper attribution or compensation, seeking $150,000 for every proven infringement.
  • The company disputes these claims, citing existing content-sharing deals and a recent award by the Wall Street Journal as evidence of its legitimacy.
  • Perplexity AI takes a broader stance, stating that many lawsuits against generative AI tools are motivated by corporations' desire to restrict access to publicly available data.

  • Perplexity AI, a startup that utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to generate content from publicly available data, has found itself at the center of a high-profile lawsuit filed by News Corp. The company, which claims to have developed an AI engine capable of generating news articles, is accused by News Corp of scraping and misusing its data without permission or proper compensation.

In a sharply worded response to the lawsuit, Perplexity AI has denied all allegations, claiming that the media conglomerate's assertions are "simply false." According to the startup, it had engaged in dialogue with News Corp prior to the filing of the lawsuit and had even expressed interest in working with the company on a content-sharing deal.

The dispute centers on allegations made by News Corp in its court documents, which claim that Perplexity AI has been posting entire chunks of newspaper articles online without proper attribution or compensation. The media conglomerate is seeking $150,000 for every proven infringement, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

However, Perplexity AI disputes these claims, pointing out that it already has content-sharing deals in place with Time, Fortune, and Der Spiegel, and would have been happy to work with News Corp on a similar arrangement. The company also notes that the Wall Street Journal, another News Corp publication, had actually voted them the best AI chatbot earlier this year.

In addition to its response to the lawsuit, Perplexity AI has taken a broader stance on the issue of media companies' efforts to regulate or shut down generative AI tools. According to the startup, there are currently around three dozen lawsuits by media companies against generative AI tools, and it is clear that many of these suits are motivated by a desire to restrict access to publicly available data.

Perplexity AI suggests that corporations prefer to live in a world where publicly reported facts are owned by corporations, and no one can do anything with those publicly reported facts without paying a toll. This stance is echoed by the company's assertion that many of these lawsuits are an attempt to stifle the development of generative AI technology.

"The common theme betrayed by those complaints collectively is that they wish this technology didn't exist," Perplexity AI states. "They prefer to live in a world where publicly reported facts are owned by corporations, and no one can do anything with those publicly reported facts without paying a toll."

The lawsuit filed by News Corp has not been commented on by the media conglomerate.
