C cloudKubed: A UK Government Contractor's Descent into Administration

UK government contractor CloudKubed has called in administrative receivers after struggling with its contracts with central government departments. The company's collapse highlights the risks associated with private contractors supplying services to large-scale public sector projects.

  • CloudKubed, a specialist supplier of data and AI solutions, has gone into administration.
  • The company had invoiced £16.2 million in contracts with central government departments.
  • CloudKubed's turnover was less than £6.5 million per year, raising questions about the viability of small private contractors.
  • The UK government's reliance on private contractors has been a subject of concern over lack of understanding and oversight.

  • CloudKubed, a self-described specialist supplier of "transformational data and AI solutions" to the UK government, has called in the administrative receivers, FRP Advisory. The company was founded in May 2021 but secured several contracts with central government departments during its relatively short existence.

According to its website, CloudKubed offered a range of services, including scalable digital strategies, portfolio transformation, program and project management, cloud and data engineering, enterprise architecture, and business transformation alignment. These services were aimed at helping large-scale organizations across various sectors, including healthcare, central government, research institutions, and others.

The company had invoiced businesses worth £16.2 million ($19.2 million), which included contracts with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Home Office, the UK Health Security Agency, and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. The final live contract, Landing Zone Accelerator Delivery Enablement Management Services with DWP, ended on January 15.

CloudKubed's website stated that it was an expert in delivering large-scale cloud adoption and maturity programs that accelerate digital transformation. However, the company's abbreviated accounts indicated a turnover of less than £6.5 million ($7.9 million) per year or fewer than 50 employees.

The UK government's reliance on private contractors has been a subject of concern, with some critics arguing that this approach can lead to a lack of understanding and oversight. The recent case of CloudKubed highlights the risks associated with this model.

FRP Advisory was appointed as the administrator for CloudKubed on January 6, according to a filing at Companies House. When contacted by The Register, FRP Advisory declined to comment on the turn of events.

The news comes as the UK government continues to explore its plans for AI integration into various aspects of society. In April last year, Laura Bouchard, a former EMEIA partnerships and industries lead at Apple, and a director of central government at Microsoft UK, was named as a non-executive director in CloudKubed.

The company's collapse raises questions about the viability of small private contractors in supplying services to large-scale public sector projects. With the UK government's focus on AI and digital transformation, it is essential to ensure that these initiatives are delivered efficiently and effectively.
