In a groundbreaking announcement, Google DeepMind has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence (AI) model, dubbed Gemini 2. This revolutionary AI system is poised to transform the way we interact with technology, revolutionizing personal computing, web search, and even our interactions with the physical world.
Gemini 2 is primarily another step up in AI's intelligence as measured by different benchmarks used to gauge such things. The model has also improved "multimodal" abilities, meaning it is more skilled at parsing video and audio, and at conversing in speech. This new version of Gemini has been trained to plan and execute actions on computers, a significant leap forward from its predecessor.
According to Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, Gemini 2 represents an important milestone in the development of AI agents that can understand more about the world around us, think multiple steps ahead, and take action on our behalf. These models have the potential to revolutionize personal computing by routinely booking flights, arranging meetings, and analyzing and organizing documents.
However, getting the technology to follow open-ended commands reliably remains a challenge, with the risk that errors could translate into costly and hard-to-undo mistakes. Nevertheless, Google believes it is moving in the right direction and has introduced two specialized AI agents to demonstrate Gemini 2's agentic potential: one for coding and another for data science.
The company also showcased Project Mariner, an experimental Chrome extension capable of taking over web navigation to do useful chores for users. In a live demo, WIRED was given a glimpse of how this might transpire with Astra, a new project that allows Gemini 2 to make sense of its surroundings as viewed through a smartphone camera or another device and converse naturally in a human-like voice about what it sees.
Through Astra, Gemini 2 can not only search the web for information relevant to a user's surroundings but also use Google Lens and Maps. It can remember what it has seen and heard—although users would be able to delete data—providing an ability to learn a user's taste and interests.
The demos were carefully curated, and Gemini 2 will inevitably make errors in real-world use. However, the model resisted efforts to trip it up reasonably well, adapting to interruptions and improvising much as a person might.
While bringing AI into the physical world presents both opportunities and challenges, Hassabis acknowledges that companies need to think seriously about privacy and security when developing these systems. "We need to learn about how people are going to use these systems," he says. "What they find it useful for; but also the privacy and security side."
Gemini 2 is a significant step forward in the development of AI, marking a new era in personal computing and user interaction. As this technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more innovative applications that transform our daily lives.
