The growing concern over energy demand on AI systems is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention from organizations worldwide.   • The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought about a myriad of benefits, including enhanced decision-making capabilities, improved efficiency, and increased productivity. However, as the demand for AI systems continues to rise, so does the concern over their impact on energy consumption and sustainability. According to recent research commissioned by SambaNova, a significant number of corporate leaders are aware that AI models have huge energy requirements, with 72% of them acknowledging this fact. Nevertheless, only 13% monitor the power consumption of AI systems they have deployed.

    The primary driver of energy consumption in AI systems is the reliance on power-hungry GPUs (Graphics Processing Units). These high-performance servers are equipped with multiple GPUs to tackle complex model training tasks, resulting in substantial power draw. This phenomenon has been observed in various organizations, with some datacenters experiencing an increase in heat generated by these powerful hardware components.

    The issue of cooling becomes even more pressing when dealing with the energy consumption of AI systems. Traditional facilities were built around racks with a power density of 2-5 kW. However, new builds must accommodate much higher power densities to support the increasing demand for AI computing. This has led to the adoption of liquid cooling solutions, which are becoming increasingly popular in datacenters.

    According to Omdia research director Vlad Galabov, the growth of AI computing will drive up datacenter power density. This trend is already evident, with utilities reporting an increase in requests for more power and the adoption of onsite self-generation through gas engines or turbines. The need for more efficient cooling solutions has also led to the development of pre-fabricated modules housing extra switchgear, UPS, and batteries.

    Not all datacenters are suitable for liquid cooling, however. Some facilities may not have the necessary infrastructure or space to accommodate these advanced cooling systems. In such cases, air-to-liquid CDUs (Coolant Distribution Units) become an essential solution to address the issue of heat management in AI computing.

    The rise of agentic AI models, which are designed to be capable of taking autonomous actions and solving multi-step problems, adds another layer of complexity to energy consumption. These more complex models will further increase the power draw of AI systems, making it even more essential for organizations to monitor their energy consumption and develop strategies to reduce waste.

    In light of these concerns, SambaNova chief Rodrigo Liang emphasizes the need for a proactive approach to more efficient AI hardware and energy consumption. He warns that if we fail to address this issue, we risk undermining the very progress AI promises to deliver.
