  • Apple has announced that its generative AI feature, known as Apple Intelligence, will be enabled by default on compatible devices starting from macOS Sequoia 15.3 and iOS 18.3. This move marks a significant shift in the company's approach to integrating AI capabilities into its products.

The announcement comes after years of teasing Apple Intelligence at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) last year, with the feature being released in stages following the September event. The latest version of the operating system will be available for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max or newer devices, as well as any iPad or Mac with an M1 processor or better.

However, users who opt-in to Apple Intelligence during setup will still have the option to disable it later on by navigating to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane and turning off the toggle. This feature includes a suite of machine-learning-augmented services and features ranging from AI proofreading, rewriting, and summarization to text-to-image and text-to-emoji generation.

Meanwhile, Google has also been expanding its AI capabilities in Workspace, adding Gemini, an AI assistant that helps users craft emails, messages, and revise documents. The feature is available for Business Standard and Business Plus plans, with customers being charged $2 more per month than before.

However, opting out of Google's various AI widgets appears to be more complicated, as the option to disable Gemini features only becomes available upon request from Google customer support. Despite providing instructions for disabling Gemini features in Workspace, these instructions seem to apply only to enterprise editions of the G-Suite.

In a related development, Microsoft has also been pushing its own brand of genAI functionality into Microsoft 365 Personal and family accounts, with a $3-a-month price hike in the US at least. Those who'd prefer an AI-less experience can opt for a basic or classic plan.

The trend towards default enablement of generative AI assistants is set to continue, with Apple's move likely to influence other companies to follow suit. As AI continues to become increasingly integrated into various software applications and services, it remains to be seen how users will respond to this shift in technology.
